Unveiling Anthropology’s Idols: Criteria and Critique for a Secular Discipline
This talk aims to approach anthropology’s own secularity from its supposed exterior, from the standpoint of theology. It argues that a complex, vital, and potentially revitalizing relation exists between these two domains. Building on ‘extra-professional’ and notably revelatory accounts senior anthropologists have provided of their life-long involvement in their discipline, I wish to demonstrate ways in which anthropology’s complex relation to theology entails both repression and preservation of the latter by the former. Beyond this complexity, the relation between these two fields is such that theology could offer a vital critique of anthropology, including of its symptomatic participation in modern idolatries, a critique capable of revitalizing its critical abilities.
